Happy Friday you guys! It’s been another incredibly busy week and the days are flying by for me, I can’t believe it’s the middle of May! Today is my Mom’s birthday so Happy Birthday to the Best Mom on the planet, we love you so much!! One year ago she was recovering from heart surgery and tomorrow she’s going on vacation with my Dad, so needless to say, we’re very grateful for the recovery she’s made over the last year. My mom is also one of the kindest most generous people you will ever meet. And she ADORES children, her sun rises and sets with hers and her grandchildren so I thought it would be fitting to focus on an organization that gives back to kids today in honor of my Mom’s birthday.
My friend Caryn reached out to me earlier this week about a charity she’s involved with called Forestdale in Queens, NY. They are a service based organization focusing on the welfare of children and families. Caryn has put together a fundraiser in partnership with Younique (the extremely popular makeup brand) to raise money for Forestdale’s “Back to School Drive” on May 19th. The money raised at this event will be used to purchase new back packs with supplies included for the 400+ children in their program. The average cost of a back pack and supplies for any school age NYC child is approximately $85.00. These families simply do not have the money to buy their children these very basic items, so without the help of Forestdale and our community they will not get what they need for school. 100% of the proceeds from the sales from this fundraiser will be used to create a basket to be raffled off – So the more purchased, the bigger the basket!
We are hoping to sell $2,000 worth of makeup by May 16th. This is a WIN/WIN for everyone involved- YOU get a great product from a great company and kids in NYC who often go without will get something new that helps them with their education!
Here is the link to place your order directly: https://www.youniqueproducts.com/KimLondon/presenter/myparties and click on “Forestdale Fundraiser hosted by Caryn Merkley” – Kim is the Younique Partner hosting the party, and she can help you with any questions on colors etc- she is a consultant for the brand. All sales need to be placed by May 16th.
So ladies, who doesn’t like makeup? A new gloss for this gorgeous spring weather? Some new mascara for date night? This is an event I can totally jump onto!! So, go get yourselves all dolled up for a GREAT cause and give back to the kids!! Thanks you guys – let’s raise some $$$!!
INFO ON FORESTDALE:
With 161 years under our belt, Forestdale has direct experience with and deep investment in ending the transgenerational transmission of poverty and trauma among disadvantaged families. Forestdale’s mission is to strengthen diverse and underserved Queens families by providing: safe and loving homes, education and enrichment, financial literacy and workforce development, and medical and dental programs. Our programs are comprehensive and innovative, employing the latest evidence-informed approaches that address the root causes of child distress and family conflict to prevent child abuse and neglect.
While traditional child welfare programs are typically designed to ensure the safety of children and facilitate better familial functioning, Forestdale is committed to going beyond safety to help children make long-term gains. One key need that we address across low income Queens families is healing trauma – both at its onset, when maternal bonds are interrupted causing non-secure attachment; as well as continuing through childhood into adulthood where they may directly experience physical, sexual or emotional abuse, or witness unrest, dysfunction and violence within their homes and communities. Moving beyond superficial approaches, Forestdale has invested in intensive, longer-term treatments which heal and build families’ future resiliency and opportunities for success.
Serving the entire borough of Queens, Forestdale’s comprehensive continuum of care supports low to moderate income families (75% border the federal poverty line) – including more than 1,000 people (from infants through adults).Close to half of the families we serve live in some of the poorest neighborhoods in Queens, including Jamaica, Hollis and St. Albans. Forestdale also serves significant populations from Corona, Elmhurst and Long Island City neighborhoods. Our families span many nationalities and self-identify as 61% African-American, 28% Latino, 6% Asian, and 5% Caucasian.
Forestdale’s results-driven culture is focused on the individual growth of our clients, achieved through best practices with demonstrated measures of success. With the support of our foundation, corporate and community partners—such as the Child Welfare Fund, Baby Buggy and JetBlue Airways—we have expanded concrete support and therapeutic programs for families that prevent the intergenerational transmission of trauma. Current evidence-based models at our agency include: Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, Passport to Parenting, Solution-Based Casework and Trauma Systems Therapy.
